Santa Fe Mountains Yoga Retreat
October 4-7 2022
I am very excited to announce our next Yoga Retreat! I have secured lodging for 3 nights at the lovely Abiquiu Inn, New Mexico. https://www.abiquiuinn.com. The Inn is located about 48 miles northwest of Santa Fe in the Jemez Mountains. This retreat will offer guests a special time to relax and soak in the joys of nature and reconnect to our inner beauty.
Rooms are based on double occupancy for $199 per night. We have a lovely indoor space that is warm and cozy. This will be nice for Yoga and Meditation. There are scenic areas outside if we choose to practice outside. The cafe at the Inn serves breakfast, lunch and dinner (meals are not included with lodging - prices are good and the menu is great!)
Abiquiu is the home of Georgia O'Keefe and Ghost Ranch. This small town on the Chama River is a special place to hold our retreat. Besides our Yoga practice there are some amazing opportunities to enjoy this beautiful country. Hiking, river rafting, horseback riding and biking. Here is a link to activities in the area https://www.abiquiuinn.com/outdoor-adventures
On Thursday, October 6 we will spend the day at Ojo Caliente Mineral Spa and Resort. Ojo Caliente is about 30 minutes from Abiquiu. You can buy a day pass and use all 11 mineral pools. You can also schedule spa services. However, at this time they are not booking groups for lodging due to Covid - and they are not reserving that far in advance https://ojosparesorts.com/ojo-caliente/
The resort also has a nice restaurant where we can enjoy lunch or dinner.
The Yoga Retreat cost will be $550 per person - a slight increase from last year. I will post a complete itinerary the end of February 2022. I am planning to have 16 guests. If you are interested let me know. If the retreat is full we will place your name on a waiting list.
For those interested I am planning to spend Friday night on October 7 in Santa Fe. I would love to show you around this beautiful historical city, Est. 1610. Personally, Santa Fe is one of my favorite places on earth to visit! I have suggestions for lodging. However, you can choose to stay at any of the many hotels in Santa Fe. I will make a group reservation at the restaurant Cafe Pasqual's for Friday evening October 7. It's an experience to remember! https://pasquals.com If you do decide to go to Santa Fe you will love the vibe and culture of this wonderful city. My next email will inform you of deposit dates for the Yoga Retreat and deposits for lodging.
A DREAM written down with a date becomes a GOAL.
A GOAL broken down into steps becomes a PLAN.
A PLAN backed by ACTION becomes REALITY.
Many Blessing,

Adriana Brettell ERYT Yin Yoga Certification, Hatha Yoga
Breath Work, Iyengar Yoga, Bikram Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga
Art of Sequencing/ Hands-On Adjustments Certification
Fascial Stretching and Strengthening Certification
Yoga has been a life- long journey for me. I was first introduced to yoga in 1967 while living in Laguna Beach, CA. After reading Autobiography of a Yogi, I was inspired to practice yoga and meditation. The asanas provided Moksha (liberation) of the mind, compassion to the soul and health for the body. I have over a thousand hours of teaching experience. I received my certification to teach Yin Yoga in 2014 with Bernie Clark, world renown educator/author. Rached Malouff, my teacher in Hatha Yoga refined my teaching skills. His legacy lives in the heart of all his students. I was also fortunate enough to take Ashtanga Yoga classes with Tim Miller, a master teacher, who was true inspiration! Additionally, I am guided by the teaching’s of BKS Iyengar which are my absolute favorite. I continue to study the Iyengar method of yoga, I feel that I will be a student for life!
This year has been very enriching and I am so thankful I was able to take two excellent trainings. The first training with Tias Little has provided me with a new level of teaching awareness. How exciting to explore with Tias the detailed nature of anatomy, physiology and neuroscience in relation to the ancient wisdom of yoga, the chakras, and the nadis! His instruction on the “Art of Sequencing” explored how to acquire balance/ alignment as we build our practice from the ground up. The second part of my training with Tias focussed on “Hands-On Adjustment". In this segment we learned the subtle art of “body reading” going beyond the physical through touch, feeling the subtle nuances and awareness of each individual's yoga practice. I am so grateful the universe led me to this knowledge!
In August of this year I took a training that will forever change how I move my physical body. Known as Fascial Stretching and Strengthening, the process focuses on creating and maintaining space within the joints. My teacher, Layna Cirelli is a certified KMI Structural Integration and Movement Educator. I received Level 1 training in kinesiology, physiology, connective tissue therapy and movement education.
The teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh gives the wisdom "To live spiritually is to live in the present." I bring this thought to class when I teach yoga. I find that it helps my students focus on the breath, alignment and posture. Yoga can provide insight to all of us. My favorite cue is to cultivate Sukha (happiness, comfortable) and Sthira (calm, steady) in asanas. Listening to the body and your inner self will ensure a safe and fulfilling practice. Teaching and practicing Yoga is my ultimate love. To share with others brings me compassion and peace.

Deborah Williams, EYT
Deborah discovered yoga in her early 20s and has been practicing and learning ever since, continuing to be amazed at the benefits she’s received and has seen in others. Over these many years, she has experienced numerous styles of yoga, including Hatha, Bikram, Vinyasa Flow, Yin Yoga, Buti, Yoga Nidra, and Kundalini, and her teaching draws from these various sources.
Deborah had been a full-time elementary teacher at both Montessori and Waldorf Schools, with a yoga practice on the side as a means for health and wellness. Attending the hot yoga studios in Sedona and Cottonwood, she was grateful to have a regular practice. After many years, she shifted out of full-time elementary teaching, and around that same time, her local studio offered its first 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training Certification. It became apparent that the moment had come to deepen her practice and prepare to become a yoga teacher.
Since the entirety of yoga is much more than simply the practice of the physical poses, she loves introducing the 8 limbs of yoga to others and includes pranayama (breathwork) and meditative practices in her classes. She welcomes all students, at all levels of experience, and offers modifications and props for comfort and ease. She believes that yoga is primarily about aligning more deeply with the inner self and discovering more about the mind-body-spirit-breath connection. With her heart-centered guidance, she strives to help practitioners find inner peace, focus, greater well-being, and transformation.
Deborah has enjoyed incorporating yoga into her elementary classes with children in the past. She currently teaches at the Sanctuary of Sedona, which is a holistic treatment rehab center for addiction, and at the Cottonwood, AZ Hot Yoga studio. She also owns and operates her own Floating Yoga business and takes people out on inflatable paddleboards to practice yoga at the convergence of the Verde River and Oak Creek.

Class Descriptions

Going Deep with Yin Yoga.
Yin Yoga has it’s roots as part of the original Hatha Yoga tradition. Yin combines the influences of Indian Yoga with Chinese Daoist Yoga to improve our health on many levels.
Most forms of yoga today are dynamic, active practices designed to work only half of our body, the muscular half. Yin allows us to work the other half, the deeper tissues of our muscles, ligaments, joints and our bones. Yin mobilizes and strengthens the joints, facia and connective tissue. The emphasis is on long-held poses.
Generally most students can do Yin. Different levels of the poses are used during the sessions. Props are an important part of the Yin practice. Therefore we use blankets, bolsters, blocks, sand bags, and straps. Props help the practitioner surrender to gravity in long held poses. This is the magic ingredient, holding the pose for 3- 5 minuets.
Yin yoga involves the Parasympathetic nervous system which restores body to a state of calmness. By doing this the fascia tissues have an opportunity to lengthen as space is created with the breath and the pose. After a Yin practice the body feels deeply relaxed as if the practitioner just experienced a deep tissue message. Yin yoga can also help the student find deeper expressions in the Vinyasa -flow practice.
Fascial Stretching and Strengthening
Fascia stretching and strengthening focuses on creating and maintaining space within the joints so that the body can maintain its structural integrity and flexibility, eliminating joint pain and dysfunction. In this class we learn how to maintain openness in the joints and the differences between muscle stretching and fascial stretching. What is the role of fascia in the body-structure and it's functions. This is a class everyone will benefit from!

Sound Healing with Crystal Bowls
Vibrational sound healing can be traced back from present day trends to many ancient civilizations including India, Africa, Europe, and the Orient. Everything in our Universe is made purely of vibrations. The human body and the entire earth are made up of energy, vibrating at different frequencies. When out of rhythm, disease and disharmony result. Therefore vibrational sound healing addresses these imbalances or blockages of the energy channels. Ancient religions and modern sciences agree that our Reality is an ocean of living energy, and that all matter (such as a human being) is simply interpenetrating waves of energy which have crystallized into form and structure. Crystal Bowls work directly with universal energy and channel it into the body to enliven our entire being.

Adriana Brettell ERYT Yin Yoga Certification

2019 Yoga Retreat Slide show and Itinerary
Testamonial
I loved the retreat in Sedona by Adriana. It was a wonderful experience with so many great classes. I wanted to attend the retreat to deepen my own practice as well as to enjoy a relaxing experience. This retreat didn’t disappoint. The morning meditation reminded me of the importance of doing a daily meditation and it was a perfect way to start each morning.
After meditation, we had a short break before the Yin Yoga class, which was wonderful in itself. Adriana is so knowledgeable about the Yin poses and I have begun to really deepen my understanding of the value of Yin and how it can restore even the most tired bodies. We also had the opportunity to participate in some amazing hikes with Adriana, which is always so relaxing and enjoyable in Sedona. Then there was the Vinyasa with Geoffrey and the restorative with Dana along with the sound healing...WOW! They were amazing additions to this retreat! On our last day, the morning meditation outside surrounded by the Sedona red rock views along with the beautiful sound healing (crystal bowls, gong, chimes, flute by Adriana and Dana) was such a serene and peaceful experience that it’s difficult to put into words. All in all, I would highly recommend this retreat in the future for anyone who is interested in deepening their practice or just wanting to experience an opportunity to rejuvenate themselves. This was the first one ever offered by Adriana and it was wonderful so I expect they will only get better from here.
I also want to say a big thank you to Bobby for all the pictures he captured during our retreat. I am especially excited to see the individual ones he took during and after our outdoor meditation on the last morning, but from seeing all his other work I’m sure they will be superb. Thank you to Bobby for sharing his talent with us during this retreat!
I look forward to future retreats with Adriana!!!

There are many great activities to plug into in and around the Sedona area, many of them free or for a small fee. We have included some of them in our retreat program such as a gallery tour, guided vortex hikes and mountain bike adventures while others you can do on your own. Here are a few activities we think are worth exploring.

Peace Park in Sedona Stupa
This striking 36-foot enlightenment stupa gets its name from Buddha Amitabha, the
Buddha of Limitless Light, whose bronze image is nestled in the faceplate of the stupa.
Filled with hundreds of millions of prayers for peace, sacred relics and ritual offerings,
the Amitabh Stupa is a vortex of enlightened presence and a beacon of blessings for
all beings. Sedona is an International City of Peace.

Vortex Hikes
There are many beautiful spiritual sites in the Sedona area. Sedona’s spiritual heritage extends far earlier. For thousands of years Native American tribes that inhabited the Sedona-Oak Creek Canyon area have use the land for sacred purposes. In fact the Anasazi (“the ancient ones”) did not live in Sedona, they lived outside. They considered Sedona a sacred area and used the area for ceremonies. To this day Yavapai Indians make a yearly trip to Oak Creek for a cleansing bath, similar to yearly pilgrimage to the Ganges made by the Hindus. The term “vortex” is more symbolic than literal. Most vortex energy sites do have a circular energy flow. They are areas of enhanced linear energy flow.Vortexes are energy flows that exist in dimensions deeper than electricity and magnetism. This may sound mystical and it is! It is also based on the latest in science. At vortex sites the energy flows in deeper dimensions. If you are interested in reading more about the vortexes of Sedona, check out Pete A. Sanders book "Scientific Vortex"
I have three favorite vortex hikes I would like to offer for our retreat. Below are brief descriptions of each.
Red Rock Crossing to experience the Inflow of Cathedral Rock. This hike is easy/short about 3 miles loop. There is no significant elevation gain. With an added benefit of walking along the Oak Creek pass Buddha Beach. This hike will be the offered Tuesday 4/30 at 1:30.
West Fork trail in Oak Creek Canyon, 4 mile loop. Wednesday, 5/1 at 1:30
Bell Rock/ Courthouse Vista is a strong Upflow vortex energy. This can be a very easy 1 mile loop. However you can add miles by hiking further. it is a lovely hike with views of Sedona looking north, west and east towards the Mogollon Rim. This hike will be offered Thursday 5/2 at 1:30
Some other favorites include Boynton Canyon. and Seven Sacred Pools on the Soldiers Pass trail in Sedona 1.1mile. Alltrails.com is an excellent website to check trails. Also, REI has a free app "Hiking Project" that you can download to your smart phone. hikingproject.com

Gallery Tour
Sedona is internationally known for its many art galleries. Dana Kjellgren is a Sedona resident art lover and collector and will be leading an art tour of some of Sedona's finest galleries. Dana has lived in the area for over 20 years. Here are some of the galleries on our tour:
Sedona Center for the Arts https://sedonaartscenter.org/
Sedona Arts Center is one of Northern Arizona’s most well-established cultural organizations and serves as the creative heart of Sedona. Founded in 1958, the nonprofit organization is based in Uptown, Sedona and offers year-round classes, exhibitions, festivals, and cultural events that enhance the creative life of the Verde Valley. The Center’s Fine Art Gallery, open daily from 10am to 5pm, promotes the original works of over 100 local artists and regularly offers special assistance for collectors and art buyers, offers private studio visits, and fosters hundreds of arts education opportunities each year.
Garland https://www.garlandsjewelry.com/collections/navajo-rugs
All of our rugs are woven by Navajo weavers, most of whom live traditionally on the Navajo Reservation located across Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. From the inception of weaving by the Navajos around 1700, weaving has provided an important economic benefit to the tribe and a fine outlet for their artistic talents. Their rugs are made in the weaver's home or hogan on vertical looms using the same methods they have used for the past three hundred years.
Turquoise Tortoise Gallery https://www.turquoisetortoisegallery.com/
Native American and Southwest Fine Art & Jewelry. This is truly a gem of Sedona!
Honshin Gallery http://honshinfineart.com/
This gallery is located in Tlaquepaque Arts and Craft Village.
Honshin is a master artist with a unique and ascending spirit that comes through in his art.
“We invite you to take a journey from your head to your heart. Through the exploration of Art, Science and nature.” Honshin

Jerome
About 20 miles outside of Sedona on a hillside lies the old mining town of Jerome. Jerome is a historical town in central Arizona. The Mine Museum explores Jerome's history as a booming copper-mining town. Jerome State Historic Park is home to Douglas Mansion, built in 1916 by a mining mogul James “Rawhide Jimmy” Douglas on a hill, overlooking his Little Daisy Mine. Another site to see is the Audrey Head Frame Park which has a glass viewing platform over a 1918 mine shaft. Art galleries and small wineries dot the downtown area. To the east, Tuzigoot National Monument, preserves an ancient hilltop pueblo.

Wine Tasting
There are almost a dozen wine tasting shops in and around town. One of our personal favorites is Page Springs Winery http://pagespringscellars.com and restaurant located just outside Sedona city limits on Page Springs Road. They create a variety of delicious wines that express the unique character of the local landscape, convey their philosophies concerning family, education and living life to its fuller. “We feel strongly that growing grapes, making wine and raising a glass is a cultural ritual that fosters friendship, brings together families, and unites communities. Good wine is not strictly the esoteric fare of nobility: Wine is for the people. "We desire to share our passion and interest in wine with everyone from the first time sipper to the seasoned enthusiast. Providing academic and hands on experiences are a big part of this desire to help people expand and trust their own senses.”

Montezuma's Castle
Montezuma's Castle is one of a number of well-preserved ancient dwellings near Sedona, including the Wupatki, Tonto, Walnut Canyon, and Tuzigootnational monuments. It is probably the most spectacular; an imposing 20 room, 5-story structure built into a recess in a white limestone cliff about 70 feet above the ground. When first (re)discovered the ruins were thought to be Aztec in origin, hence the name bestowed on them by early explorers, but they are now known to belong to the Sinagua Indian peoples who farmed the surrounding land between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, before abandoning the area. The good state of preservation of the ruins is due in part to their protected location, shielded from rain and sun, and also the relatively early designation of the site as a national monument (in 1906).

Restorative Yoga with Yoga Nidra/Crystal Bowls
In the Restorative Yoga portion of the session, you will be guided into supported poses on the floor through demonstrations by the instructor and individual attention to help you relax into the most comfortable version of the poses for you. We will use blankets, bolsters, blocks, straps and sandbags to help the body release muscle tension and relax deeply. If desired, the instructor can also provide hands' on adjustments to facilitate deeper release which may include Reiki, as the individual chooses. Our goal will be to provide you with the opportunity to experience a sense of peace and relaxation difficult to attain in the normal circumstances of our lives. We will finish the session with Yoga Nidra, a guided meditation practice which is led by the instructor as you relax in stillness in Savasana or a supported relaxation pose. You have only to listen and follow the instructor's voice to access a deep state of consciousness between waking and sleeping where you can bring your chosen intention to fruition. Yoga Nidra is an ancient yogic practice that is being used widely today to help first responders and military veterans deal more effectively with Post Traumatic Stress. It is also very beneficial for addressing the negative patterns that most of us deal with in our lives and can help to bring about a deep sense of peacefulness and well-being.
